When Jill met Jay Greenfield she knew she had found her forever love. She was a kindergarten teacher, he was a high-powered attorney and their lives were perfect. But when a tragic accident takes Jay’s life, this young bride is left to pick up the pieces.
Jill finds herself a young widow facing multiple decisions she thought she had a lifetime to decide. With support from her childhood best friends, Lanie and Stella, Jill attempts to piece her life back together. With nightmares plaguing her dreams and the struggles of constant grief over Jay’s passing, Stella and Lanie keep near constant vigilance over her.
In the process of settling the estate, Jill learns that her husband was not quite the man she thought he was. She finds herself transported to the small beach town of Oak Island, North Carolina. But the fairy tale ending she envisioned no longer exists. She must face the reality that Jay is gone as she finds herself having a chance at love one more time.
Safe and Sound follows a yearlong journey of love, loss, friendship, and conquering the unexpected.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Safe and Sound is a sweet, sentimental and inspiring romance. It’s more than a simple book about grieving and friendship. This is the story of a woman who has to face her husband’s death after only two years of marriage and she doesn’t take it very well. When life throws a curving ball at you, the results might be really unexpected. Jill has to re-discover herself and love. Luckily she has a great support system in the bodies of two awesome friends that take a big role in the story.

Jill, the main character, is an interesting woman. I like how broken and sad she is after the accident. It was interesting to read about a character that falls so deep into a hole and has a hard time finding her way out. She isn’t flawless and I think this is good.

Her friends are really funny. I think they are the engine that moved the story. They sound and are described as really good friends. They are caring and loyal which was certainly necessary for Jill.

The story has a fluent rhythm, which is great because in a romance you don’t want to rush anything but neither do you want to wait chapters and chapters to have some surprises. The revelations come frequently and each one takes the story to a new path. Most of the situations presented are unbelievable when you think about them but that’s the magic of romance books. You want them to give you hope and this book achieves it. Jill has a really hard time only to come back stronger, happier and more in love with life than never.

Also, the writing style is simple but attractive, creating a charming world. It has good descriptions and scenarios.

The only problem I had with the book was the whole age difference drama. I found it really annoying mainly because for me it wasn't real. Ok, she is 28 and Ross is 22. Are really six years such a big difference??? Mmm… it’s true they have different lifestyles but that’s it. Yes, she used to be married and maybe she had a more adult life but sometimes the author made her look older than 28. I’m 24 and people around me are in the age group between 22 to 30 and we all act the same, there are some differences but is not like she was 40 and he was 20.

Anyway, Safe and Sound is a sweet and light romance that I enjoyed and read in a couple days. I could read more books by this author. Highly recommendable.

  1. I was contacted as well for a review, but I'm not into contemporary romance at the moment. It really fascinates me how much my reading preferences change from time to time in the span of one year! Do you have moments like that also, Ruty?

I like charming books, though, and I'm glad you had a sweet time with this one :)
