Hanleigh is a brand new British author. Hanleigh loves books more than nearly anything in the world; whether it's reading them or writing them, Hanleigh just can't get enough. She relishes in the way authors can create worlds with the words they put in their books. Hanleigh absolutely adores Romantic Fiction. She first fell in love with literature as a small child reading Dr Zeus. She then fell in love with romance literature when she first read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Hanleigh is about as English as it's possible to be. She sometimes wishes she could live inside the world that she can create inside her mind, but since that isn't possible she puts pen to paper and shares that world with this world instead.

Nooooo. I refuse to continue with that ending. OMG!! You cannot end the book there. I need the second book NOW, like yesterday.

Well, let me tell you what this is about. Georgia Kentley is a police officer who has to deal with a new boss right after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend/best friend. She is a brave woman who due to some events in her past has a strong shield around her, hates being the damsel in distress and works as hard as any man. Then we have the new DCI Walker Trent. At first, he misjudges Georgia and is a bit of a misogynistic. But quickly they have to join forces to catch the bad guy.

The book has a fast passing, the events come and go one after the other. Their past are quickly shared with us so we see where each one is standing. There are some predictable moments but they are ok.

I read it in just a few hours. The book is not too long and the writing is simple and easy to read, those are a few of the reasons why I couldn't put it down. I'm sure that if life wouldn't have put in the middle I would have read it faster. If you like this kind of romance you will devour it as fast as me.

I know the romance it's a bit rushed but this doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The book contains some sex scenes with the right doses of sensuality and hotness.

Review: The House of the Soul

TITLE: The House of the Soul
AUTHOR: Annie Dawson

FORMAT: Paperback & ebook

Homemaker Ella Casey is circling the middle-age drain. Her once adventurous life is now measured in loads of laundry, her grand dreams of changing the world diluted with each rinse cycle. When she flies to the enchanting California estate of her best friend Teri for a Peace Corps reunion, the accomplishments of her peers threaten to soak up the last drops of Ella’s floundering self-esteem.
Teri Flores is everything Ella is not: glamorous, wealthy, and fearless. Her sprawling mansion, La Casa Del Alma, serves as both artists’ retreat and modern day salon to Teri’s eclectic entourage. Teri entertains her guests with lavish meals, outrageous activities, and impassioned debates, but the weekend sours when old grievances mix with new ambitions.
As past and present collide, Ella struggles to redefine herself, but will her growing need to validate her life end up destroying it?
THE HOUSE OF THE SOUL is a journey of love, loss, and friendship, and a treasure map for anyone brave enough to embark on the precarious voyage of self-discovery.

Annie Dawson grew up bouncing around the United States. She began writing while studying Communications and Journalism at the University of Hawaii. After graduation, she worked in television news before joining a leading advertising agency in Honolulu. There she produced a wide variety of documentaries, industrials, and television commercials. At the age of 30, Dawson left the corporate world and traveled to Ghana as a Peace Corps volunteer. Soon after her return from West Africa she married her soulmate and moved with him to New Zealand. Together they are raising two beautiful boys and a variety of two, three and four-legged pets.

I always say that if a book makes you cry, laugh or get mad, the book deserves lots of stars because somehow it touched your emotions and made you feel something, good or bad you felt something just by reading. ´The House of the Soul´ did that for me and more. I don't know if it was the timing, the excellent writing or just the story. I ended up devouring the book and loving Ella. I cried when I lost sight of the vision that separates fiction from reality. Just let me tell you that if you want to read a book that makes your heart and mind blow you need to read this.

Ella is a typical middle age mother with the same hopes and dreams as any of us. A reunion with her Peace Corps friends is the perfect occasion for her to re-define her life. Of course that at first she only compares her achievements and her life with the others and it doesn't turn out good.
So through the story (jumping from past to present), we have to re-live Ella's life to decide what to do next.

Ella is everything I want in a character human, imperfect, real and totally relatable. Her desire to do more with her life and her constant internal struggle because she feels unachieved or a fraud is something I think we all experience at some point in our lives. We like to believe we can change the world and we forget that just saving one life is enough. We are always trying to do what we are supposed to do and others opinion impacts in our choices in ways we cannot imagine.

The different characters help Ella and us to think about life and what truly matters. The pages move too fast and the reading is more than enjoyable.

I recommend and loved this book and would read it again and again.

Review: And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau

AUTHOR: Mathias B. Freese

PUBLISHER: Wheatmark
FORMAT: Paperback & ebook

ADD TO GOODREADS

And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau tells the story of a New York City man who becomes an Alabama man. Despite his radical migration to simpler living and a late-life marriage to a saint of sorts, his persistent pet anxieties and unanswerable questions follow him. Mathias Freese wants his retreat from the societal "it" to be a brave safari for the self rather than cowardly avoidance, so who better to guide him but Henry David Thoreau, the self-aware philosopher who retreated to Walden Pond "to live deliberately" and cease "the hurry and waste of life"? In this memoir, Freese wishes to share how and why he came to Harvest, Alabama (both literally and figuratively), to impart his existential impressions and concerns, and to leave his mark before he is gone.

Mathias B. Freese is a writer, teacher, and psychotherapist who has authored six books. His I Truly Lament: Working Through the Holocaust won the Beverly Hills Book Awards and the Reader's Favorite Book Award, and it was a finalist in the Indie Excellence Book Awards, the Paris Book Festival, and the Amsterdam Book Festival. In 2016 Tesserae: A Memoir of Two Summers, his first memoir, received seven awards.

'And Then I Am Gone'... a non-fiction that it could be the voice of any fictional character but is the real voice of author Mathias B. Freese. A man who moves from New York to Alabama and brings Thoreau to takes us on a journey through his life, his thoughts, errors, and successes. A life that like many other is full of richness and wisdom, a life that is far from perfect but it's real.

I'm not very familiar with Thoreau but still, I enjoyed the book because he is not the protagonist of this story, he only comes to help Mathias with his goal. Write a book with a powerful message before the end comes.

I enjoyed the writing and the passing. I loved the part where he asks himself: Why does he write? His intensive analysis is comparable to any other activity in our lives, it's a profound reflexion on why do we do the things we do? What are we ultimate looking for, what are our motivations? In essence, what is that we want from life? what's the meaning of our lives?

Whoever becomes a master over these powers is awarded the title of magician and given fame, power, riches, and glory. Journey with a group of kids as they strive to rise to the top and become members of the Magician’s Workshop.
Layauna desperately wants to create beautiful things with her magical powers, but all she can seem to do is make horrible, savage monsters. For years she has tried to hide her creations, but when her power is at last discovered by a great magician, she realizes that what she’s tried to hide might actually be of tremendous value.
Kai just wants to use his powers to have fun and play with his friends. Unfortunately, nearly everyone on his island sees him as a bad influence, so he’s forced to meet them in secret. When one of the creatures they create gets out of control and starts flinging fireballs at their town, Kai is tempted to believe that he is as nefarious as people say. However, his prospects change when two mysterious visitors arrive, praising his ability and making extraordinary promises about his future.
Follow the adventures of Kai, Layauna, and a boatload of other characters as they struggle to grow up well in this fantastical world.

When J.R. Fehr popped out of the womb, he knew there was more to the world than the four boring hospital walls that he was seeing. “Zango!” his newborn mind exclaimed as he saw people appear and disappear through a mysterious portal in the wall. As a child he found life wowtazzling, but as he grew older the cold water of reality hit him, and the magic he once knew vanished. After spending some wet and shivering years lost in a joyless wasteland, he once again began to see magic in the world. He writes because the Wonder of true life is far grander than anything he ever thought possible.

The first glimmering Chris Hansen had that there was far more to reality than he had ever imagined occurred six days after his ninth birthday. “Christopher!” cried a wise, old sage. “Life is full of deep magic. Miraculous things happen all around us.” Chris looked around him and asked, “Where? I don’t see anything spectacular.” The man held out a pair of glasses. “Here, put these on.” The boy placed them over his eyes and—“Whoa!” He was gobsmacked by the Wonder he saw. But it lasted only a moment. The man vanished in a flash of starlight and the lenses melted and trickled down his cheeks.  Then a message was sung into his ear, “Go and seek what you have seen.” Full of expectation and childlike optimism, Chris set out. To his great joy, this quest has led him to discover many more glimmerings of this miraculous Wonder, often in the most unexpected of places.

In a world where magic is real and people has magical abilities, anything that you imagine can be real. With this premise, we are introduced into "The Magician´s Workshop" and at first the magic and fantasy are great to read. I started reading and fell in love with the story, I kept reading and wanted more and more but somewhere along half the book I got lost. I truly don´t know what happened, I was enjoying the characters but somehow I got drifted off.

I liked the writing because it was easy to read but it wasn't enough. It's not that it's aimed at a young audience because for me books are for all ages, maybe it was that I felt like the story was taking too much to get into the action? I really wanted to love this book, I mean I loved the cover.

The book has lots of great reviews so maybe it was just me or the timing. If you like fantasy give it a try.

GOODREADSAMAZON

After a heartbreaking ending in Skylark, I had to know what was next for Billie. When your life crumbles and pain is too much sometimes the best option is just to move on. If you thought you had enough in the first book, you were wrong. Borrowed Wings is another emotional, raw and wild ride. Ruthie writes the most amazing books (at least these two touched my soul in an amazing way).

In this installment, we have more about the other characters. For example, we have more about Jack, the character we learned to love in the previous book and is now a central player. We discover so much about his past and his family to finally understand why he is who he is.

This one is a really good written book and it's almost impossible to put it down. The story drags you down and buries you in a consuming world where your emotions are torn apart.

I absolutely loved this book and I'm happy I've read it.

I love to read and I love to learn new things but sometimes our dynamic and fast world doesn't let me sit and read for long so when I was presented with the idea of reading a book in less than 60 minutes, of course, I had to say Yes. In60Learning has a catalog of historical and biographical books that can be read in 60 minutes, yes ONE HOUR. And it's true!!!

Originally, I wanted to read another book but I read "Hatshepsut: The Pharaoh-Queen of Egypt" and I fully enjoyed it. I knew nothing about Hatshepsut and the book presented enough knowledge to get to know a woman with a big role in the Egyptian History.

The writing is easy to understand. Sometimes biographical books feel heavy or are full of facts we really don't care. Here the idea is to be able to read it in a short time and learn something, and the objective is achieved with short chapters that gattered the necessary information to understand the subject with simple language.

If you like non-fiction and learning this is a good choice, especially if you don't have much free time.

“I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes and see him standing at the foot of the bed, staring at me. Some nights I don’t think he sleeps at all.”
Ashley Preston has a problem. Her husband Nick has fallen victim to a mysterious illness, alternating between bizarre physical symptoms for which doctors cannot determine a cause and alarming personality changes which have Ashley fearing not just for Nick’s health but for her own safety as well. Desperate to save her husband, she turns to the only person she believes can help her: Damian Fuentes.
Ashley knows Damian’s family has dabbled in some kind of dark magic over the years. She also knows that when Nick was ten years old, Damian’s grandfather performed a strange ritual on him. Convinced that this ritual is at the root of her husband’s problem, Ashley begs Damian to delve into the Fuentes family’s darkest secrets in search of a cure. But Damian has spent the past five years trying to distance himself from his family and his traumatic past. Helping Ashley will mean resurrecting the long-dead ghosts of his most disturbing memories. If he saves Nick he may very well lose himself.

When Ashley appears on her doorstep, Jenn knows the past has come to hunt her again. Ashley needs Damian's help to save her husband Nick. The four of them share a tragic past and apparently, the consequences of it keep messing with their lives.

This one is a magnificent story that traps you and doesn't let you go until the end. You keep waiting to discover more about the Fuentes family and the magic they supposedly have. The characters move on with the story and nobody stops to tells us what happened all those years ago, we have to complete the puzzle as they go and with the information that little by little they provide.

All the characters are amazing, each one has a defined personality and we want to save them all. I loved the author's writing and how she described scenes and dialogues. I really got lost in the reading.

There is no low point in the story and it there are scenes with a just degree of tension and violence necessary to create a good atmosphere. The Fuentes Legacy is such a rich and solid story, each detail is taking care of and you want more and more.

I absolutely loved this book, I wasn't expecting such suspense and action and it was refreshing to read a different kind of book that hooked me up from the beginning.

As a fan of science fiction and fantasy stories my whole life, I never planned to write a book. But, when my daughter Siena was born, I found myself making up fantastic tales to keep her entertained. When she told me she wanted to write a book based on one of the stories, what was an over indulgent father supposed to do? So, here I am, an unexpected author. My stories are family friendly. They are designed to be read by both kids and adults, or even better, by parents reading to their children. Don't be fooled, though. These stories are complex, with lots of twists and turns! Adults will be enthralled, and children will be enchanted.

Hyla is an orphan little girl who has been surviving in the streets until one day her path crosses with her savior. She is taken to Castlemount and her life changes forever. Suddenly she is training to be a dragon rider and has not one but two beautiful and lovely baby dragons.

The story moves fast into her new world and how she deals with all of it. Being from a poor background she has to learn how to behave in this new place and tries to hide where she comes from. With dreams and flashes, we learn a bit more about her past.

Hyla is a really sweet character, given her rough upbringing she doesn't trust in people but deep down she wants to be accepted and belong to somewhere.

This one has all the fantasy elements needed for a great story: knights, dragons, fights, people plotting behind others' backs and more. I really loved the dragons!!! the descriptions were AMAZING. We have some good chapters at the end, full of the tension and fights needed to close up a great fantasy book.

My only minor issue was that I forgot that she is supposed to be a kid, Hyla sounded like a teenager and not a six-seven year old. It's nothing so bad but I just mention it so you know.

And of course, I have to mention that I think it's amazing that the authors are father and daughter, imagine creating something so beautiful and magical with the people you love. You can feel the passion they share for fantasy worlds and telling stories.
