Breakup Doctor Brook Ogden has spent the last year sifting through the fallout from the disastrous decision that led to her unconscious uncoupling with boyfriend Ben Garrett. Despite advising her clients you can’t be friends with an ex, she and Ben have somehow begun to stitch together a friendship—one Brook hopes is slowly turning into more. That is, until Ben introduces his new girlfriend, Perfect Pamela, a paragon of womanly virtues who is everything Brook is not.
While Brook navigates her newly volatile emotional life, an unwelcome surprise shows up on her doorstep: the ex-fiancĂ© who broke her heart two years ago—one month before their wedding. Between her ex’s desire to rekindle their attachment, her best friend Sasha’s unexpected crisis, and her own unsquelchable feelings for Ben, Brook finds herself questioning the personal progress she’s made in the last two years—and threatened with the highest-stakes Breakup Doctor failures she’s ever faced.

'Heart Conditions' is a simple but good chick lit. It's the story of Brook 'The Breakup Doctor'. After messing things up with Ben, she is now trying to be friends with him when the man who broke up their engagement knocks on her door.

This one is a fresh, fast and easy to read story. The plot is a bit predictable and some events were dragged for too long. If you like chick lit, you would enjoy this one because it has all the elements of the genre and the ending is everything you would expect.

The characters were ok but they are the reason why I couldn't love the book. Brook is the typical "Do as I say, not as I do". As a therapist, she makes a living giving people advice on how to move on after a breakup. Of course, she is the first on doing the opposite of what she preaches. She is friend with an ex, still has feelings for him and forgives her ex-fiance. I'm ok with all of these because real people often do this but she needs to act her age and talk to people instead of assuming what they're thinking. Then, we have her best friend who is dating her brother, another one that should just talk to people and say what's really on her mind. And don't forget Ben, I could smack him. He and Brooke were impossible, please someone needs to man up and talk about what's really going on.

Now, Michael was the one I liked. I enjoyed when people prove that changing is real and possible. Maybe he only needed to grow up.

It's true that this book can be read as a standalone but I think that if you read all the books you will understand the characters evolution or, at least, I hope so. I need to believe that Brook was not always like this.

Review: Hydromancist @CharmainePauls

TITLE: Hydromancist
SERIES: Seven Forbidden Arts #4
AUTHOR: Charmaine Pauls
RELEASE DATE: October 17th 2015October 17th 2015
PUBLISHER: Satin Romance
FORMAT: paperback & ebook
SOURCE: complimentary copy

She's sleeping with him.She lied to him.She loves him.
Can she destroy him?
Tough and invincible Maya Martin is part of Cain Jones' paranormal crime taskforce. Her ability to manipulate water makes the South African born hydromancist an invaluable asset to the team. When AK47's are smuggled from Mexico to Zimbabwe via Costa Rica, Maya is sent on a mission to destroy the arms and expose the syndicate. Her main suspect is the new Australian ambassador, Timothy Fardel, but the dark side of his personality is not the hidden truth Maya expected. Neither are the emotions that get in the way. Faced with honoring her oath or following her heart, Maya has to make the most difficult choice of her life.
This book contains consummated love scenes and explicit language. Reader discretion is advised. This is Book 4 of the Seven Forbidden Arts series but also reads as a standalone. For the best reading enjoyment, it is recommended that the series be read in chronological order.

South African born Charmaine Pauls is a gypsy at heart who likes to look at the world from the lens of her camera. She writes dark and paranormal romance novels. The author currently resides in Chile with her husband and children.

'Hydromancist', fourth book in the Seven Forbidden Arts is all about Maya. The sexy and deathly South African beauty is now the main character in a fast and entertaining story. Set in Costa Rica, the story has beautiful scenarios which are perfect for a woman who can manipulate water. Reading about Maya and her power is exciting, you can feel the molecules of her body changing when she is in control and the writing makes is real and palpable.

Maya has been present in all the books but now we get to know her better. We learn about her past, her childhood and her old wounds. We discovered a strong woman with a vulnerable side hidden under thick walls. We witness her internal battle when feelings and duty are in opposite sides of the table and we suffer when her life is in danger.

Tim, the sexy Australian ambassador, is an intriguing character, he is very cryptic and his behavior has all of us in the dark. He wants Maya with the force of a tornado but still doesn't want to give her what she desires. Once we learn why is that everything makes sense.

As you imagine, this book has an important sexual component. Passion and desire are part of the story and make it the great book it is. The paranormal element is also great, this book adds new players to the big game and it gets better and better.

The author keeps writing excellent books about extraordinary people. Each one can be read as a stand alone but is better if you read all of them.

Ella Emerson lives in Florida with her husband and three wonderful children. When she isn't writing you can find her watching movies or playing games with her children. She loves to read, write and eat pizza. A true lover of the beach, she enjoys the sun, surf, sand and sea. She also is a huge fan of the cinema and enjoys crazy 80's chick flicks. She was raised a military brat, and has seen her fair share of the world. She loves using her own experiences and turning them into lovely romantic tales.

In high school, she discovered her love for reading, and even had one of her poems published in a national magazine. She continues to read, write, review and hopefully she can become an inspiration to her own children, as well as others.

Follow Ella on:

Trish is a typical high school girl. A senior ready to take the world, she is still trying to convince her father to let her pursue a career in design. One morning, she meets a hot guy in a coffee, what she doesn't know is that the new guy is her new English teacher. Levi is a twenty-four-year-old man who just got his first teaching job. All his plans fly out of the window the moment he sets his eyes on Trish.

What at first starts a game of flirting and playing with the forbidden, then turns into a passional and erotic relationship. Trish and Levi are fire when together, they both have a desperation for each other. They bring fantasies to live and make thermometers explode.

The book deals with a taboo subject: a teacher-student relationship. But you have to know this: Trish is eighteen and Levi twenty-four, they are only six years apart so age is not the problem. Of course, he is in a position of "power" and all that crap, but this is a fiction story and you need to leave your prejudices at the door.

The plot is solid, the writing is very good. The characters are more than just a name.

The book has two authors and you can feel that in the reading. Each author wrote from a character POV (one wrote the girl, the other the teacher) and let me tell you I think it was an excellent choice. At the end of the book, they talk about how they worked together if you want to know more.
Anyway, this dual dynamic gives each character an unique voice. Sometimes in dual POV stories, characters tend to feel similar or have similar traits. This time we don't have this problem, Levi and Trish sound and are different.

Overall, "Teacher" is a hot story, with a nice romance story. There are some cliches but it still is a very recommendable book.

The fire I’d been trying to contain exploded. I pushed her against the wall and as her books fell to the ground, I slammed my mouth to hers. It was rough, demanding, all-consuming and when I got a taste of her again, I knew I couldn’t stop this time. She had no idea what she did to me, and I was about to show her.
I pinned her hands above her head as we continued this angry kiss. A kiss that made my cock rock hard and begging for release. When she moaned I broke the kiss and searched her eyes. “Nothing happened with me and Brandi this weekend. Nothing could happen because I don’t want replacement pussy, I want yours.”
She gasped, and I pressed my lips to hers again. Still holding her hands above her head with one hand, I trailed the other down her body until I reached the bottom of her skirt.
I pushed my hand under and rubbed small circles on her thigh. She thrashed beneath me, which turned me on even more. Slowly moving my hand, I cupped her pussy over her panties and she let out a yell that I kept quiet with my mouth. I rubbed her softly, feeling the heat and wetness through her panties. Feeling my way to the top of them, I reached my hand inside and was met with the softest, smoothest, wettest pussy I’d ever felt. I broke the kiss once again and nipped her bottom lip. “Fuck, your pussy is dripping with need. The idea that I made you this wet is so fucking hot.”
“Oh, Levi, please,” she begged and not one to disappoint I slammed a finger into her incredibly tight pussy.
“Fuck!”
“If you can’t be quiet, I will stop. Do not draw attention to this room,” I demanded, and like a good girl she listened. I worked my finger in and out of her as I buried my face into her neck. “Are you a virgin? You’re so fucking tight?”
“No,” she moaned out, and I knew I needed to give her the release her body needed so badly.
I added another finger and watched her beautiful face as she bit her lip to stay quiet. As I finger fucked her, I couldn’t help but look at the way her face flushed and her tits bounced. I was about to bust a nut from this alone, and I knew in the moment that I couldn’t just let her go.
Picking up my pace, listening to her soft moans, I reached my thumb up and rubbed her clit. Like a tsunami wave, her orgasm crashed over her hard and fast. I slammed my mouth to her to be sure she kept quiet while she rode this wave.
When I felt her body begin to shake, I pulled back, with my fingers still inside of her and searched her face. “This is how I feel about you. Understood?”

Review: String @davidestesbooks

TITLE: STRINGS
AUTHOR: David Estes
RELEASE DATE: February 15th, 2016
FORMAT: Paperback & ebook

ADD TO GOODREADS
Sometimes the strings that tie us down are the same strings that set us free. Sixteen-year-old Pia has always lived in a mysterious facility where mechanical strings control her existence. She plays apprentice to her father, Gio, in performing nanotech designs for the Company, and she soon suspects there are diabolical human forces behind the manufactured reality of her world. Though her childhood memories and the origins of the strings remain strangely elusive, she begins to find solace with the introduction of two unlikely friends: daring, irrational Sofia, and calm, tender Marco. As the truths of the past and present unravel together, Pia must find a way to free herself from her strings and escape the facility before facing the wrath of the unstable head of security, Mr. Davis. But to gain her freedom, she must navigate the dangers posed by Davis and by her suspicious new friends to find the real identity of the puppeteer. If Pia can succeed in revealing the secrets of the Company, she may very well find the independence she so desperately seeks. But in her controlled world nothing is as it seems, and the closer she gets to the truth, the graver the consequences.

David Estes is the author of more than 20 science fiction and fantasy novels that have received hundreds of thousands of downloads worldwide, including The Moon Dwellers, Fire Country, Slip, Brew, and his new SciFi Pinocchio retelling, Strings. He lives in Hawaii with his inspiring Aussie wife, Adele, rambunctious son, Beau, and naughty cat, Bailey. When he's not writing, you'll likely find him at the beach swimming, snorkeling, or reading under an umbrella.

Set in a dystopian world, 'Strings' is a re-telling of the classic Pinocchio. Pia lives confined in a mysterious place with his father, forced to work with nanotechnology and attached to strings. She can't remember most of her childhood until one night memories start to flow back into her head and she starts to plot plans to free herself and her father.

The strings are so relevant that could be considered a character. They have a mind of their own and control every move she and her father do. It was hard to picture how a person could move around with 15 strings controlling each inch of her body but after a while it becomes easy.

Pia is the classical sixteen-year-old girl from any YA book. She is ready to put her life at risk, the family is her first priority and has all the traits of a typical heroin. She has a strong bond with his father and Fig (a sweet robot) and tends to make rushed decisions. For some reasons, I wasn't a fan of her all the time. Maybe I'm tired of teenagers with "I'm the only one who can save the world" complex. But of course, she is the only one who can save the world ;)
Now, Marco and Sofia are the friends that the story introduces to help Pia solve the puzzle that is her life. Marco is a likable character, a bit cryptic but handsome, so he is ok. Sofia brings color and "freedom" but she also has some secrets.

This is a retelling and it takes many ingredients from the classic story. For example, she has a tiny companion (instead of a Jiminy Cricket) and instead of a growing nose, she has to deal with a strange skin rash whenever she lies. These were good elements of the story and they are easy to identify. Fans of the original story will discover an original story that evokes the classical without copying it.

Now, let's talk about the things I didn't like. The romance, for example, is sweet and innocent for their age but for moments it had the intensity of a mature relationship which wasn't very believable. Then, there is the dystopian element. We only know that the story is set in a dystopian future because she says it on a line but we don't know nothing about the outside world which is understandable given the circumstances but... if someone would have told that the story takes place in our days I could have believed it, the technology used was quite imaginable.

My biggest problem was the "bad guy". I won't say who the evil character is (no spoilers here) but let me tell that his-her reasons why he-she is doing what it's doing were ridiculous, at least for me. The whole "daddy issues" and the rest of his-her arguments got me asking me things like Really? - Are you serious? - Move on already..."

Anyway, I'm sure many YA fans will love it but it wasn't my favorite book.

Review: Dead Money Run @jfj_books

TITLE: Dead Money Run
SERIES: Lou Malloy Crime Series #1
AUTHOR: J. Frank James
RELEASE DATE: August 26th, 2013
FORMAT: Paperback & Ebook
SOURCE: complimentary copy

ADD TO GOODREADS

Lou Malloy learns of his sister's death right before he is released from prison, having served 15 years for the theft of $15 million from an Indian casino. He wants two things: to keep the $15 million, which no one has been able to find, and to track down and punish whoever killed his sister.    Lou Malloy teams up with Hilary Kelly, a private investigator. In no time, Lou has found the hidden $15 million, recovered guns and ammunition hidden with the money, and murdered two low-level mobsters and fed them to the crocodiles.
As the body count rises, the story grows more complex and his sister's death becomes more mysterious.

J. Frank James is the author of crime thriller novels. His crime fiction books are gripping and suspenseful with readers being unable to put them down once they get into them. Jim has a passion for writing, and he certainly has the knowledge and experience to write realistic crime thriller novels, thanks to his extensive background in law. Jim attended law school, where he was a member of the law review. He even went on to pass the state bar and started his own law practice that specialized in complex litigation.

Jim’s experience in law helps lend credibility to his crime fiction books. Not only that, Jim has traveled extensively and gains inspiration for his crime thriller novels from his travels. Some of the countries that Jim has visited include Peru, Brazil, Italy, Greece and countless others. From observing other cultures and gaining new experiences, Jim is able to infuse new life into his books and develop believable characters that readers can identify with.

At present, Jim has published four crime thriller novels in the Lou Malloy crime series: the run beginsdead money runonly two cats, and blue cat in paradise. They offer the readers just enough information to keep them guessing and trying to solve the crimes until the end of the books when they are actually revealed. Jim’s books provide fresh and unique takes on crime. They are not the same whodunit type books that have been done over and over again. By infusing his personal travels into his books, Jim creates characters and atmospheres based on just enough truth to be relatable.

Jim’s books have everything in them from robbery to prison to family. They have hard and soft elements simultaneously to really capture the life of a hardened criminal who is still very human and struggles with the same emotions as the rest of society. At the same time, Jim gives the reader perspectives from private investigators to balance out the story.

Jim’s books even have a hit of romance when his characters come to care for each other as more than just friends. Then, crime and love mixes to create a dynamic atmosphere that is even more complicated than ever before since characters care not only for each other but for their other family members as well. Jim has an amazing way of incorporating various elements into his crime novels to create thrillers that readers cannot get enough of. All four of his books in the series carry on one from the other to continue the same story concerning the hardened criminal who did 15 years in prison, Lou Malloy, and who comes to be his partner, private investigator, Hilary Kelly. The two of them go it together to create gripping stories that keep readers coming back for more.

Jim is an artist and creates all of his own book covers.

'Dead Money' is an exciting story with a vibrant rhythm and the velocity of a fast car. This is the story of Lou Malloy, now an ex-convict after spending fifteen years in prison after robbing $15 million dollars from a casino. Once the word is out that he is free, the people he robeed will want their money back causing an endless game of cat and mouse. With the help of a PI (who happens to be a sexy woman), a prison friend and a deadly personality, Lou will dig deeper to find out who killed his sister and what's really going on.

Lou Molloy is a phenomenal character. He is the tipical bad boy that becomes the hero of the story, his means are not always "correct" and could be considered inmoral, and he has a tendecy of punching then asking. He his very smart and is always two steps ahead his enemies.

The story has a solid plot, an excellent writing and fresh dialogues. The author created a story with a sensation of vertigo and put the characters in a position where they have to be alert at all times. Despite bringing a new element and surprise with each chapter, the reading is easy to follow and the reader can complete the wholes with each new piece of the puzzle.

Overall, it's a great mystery book full with action and likeable characters. There are many books in this series and I can't wait to read what's next.

Review: The Homeport Journals @ACBurchAuthor

TITLE: The Homeport Journals
AUTHOR: A.C. Burch
RELEASE DATE: March 27th, 2015
PUBLISHER: Wilde City Press
FORMAT: Paperback & ebook
SOURCE: complimentary copy

Fleeing New York City and an abusive partner, would-be writer Marc Nugent finds work at HomePort, the Provincetown mansion of Lola Staunton, a fabulously wealthy recluse. Aided by an attractive-but-unattainable artist and an all-too-available cross-dresser, Marc investigates accusations of rape and murder that have estranged Lola from a childhood friend for more than sixty years. Past and present converge when a long-lost journal reveals tales of infidelity, adultery, and passion that mirror the life Marc has recently abandoned. When his ex-lover arrives in search of revenge, Marc must confront his past, his notions of family, and his capacity for love.
A.C. Burch spent his early summers on Cape Cod and since then, the sand has never left his shoes. His first visit to Provincetown sparked a romance with the town and forged a love of the sea that continues to this day.

A.C. trained as a classical musician, but his passion for the arts extends to photography, the art scene in Provincetown and Miami, and, of course, the written word. His literary icons run the gamut from Jane Austen to Agatha Christie by way of Walter Mosely and Patrick Dennis.
A.C. is the proud father of a golden retriever pup named Dori and splits his time between Provincetown and South Beach.

Marc is the new guy in Homeport. Running away from an abusive relationship he is there searching for inspiration and a place to start new. He will end up in a mansion full of peculiar people. His curiosity will make him learn about and old conflict between Lola and Dorrie. He will make his mission to unveil the past and make things right.

With a steady rhythm, the story moves on as Marc completes the puzzle with the help of his new friends while finding love on the way. The writing is very good and the story could have been set in any time frame.

The characters are complex and each one has a solid past. The author did a great job writing people with real personalities and taking the time presenting us their stories. Marc has a hard past and reading about his previous relationship was emotional. I think it was smart to include some scenes despite being violent or dark. Those moments brought him to Homeport so it was important to understand what happened. Helena is the typical cross-dresser, she is colorful, loud and full of life. She can be a bit dramatic but still is my favorite!
Lola and Dorrie are amazing, they are more active than people half their ages. They are full of life and have great personalities.

The romance wasn't my favorite part. Marc and Cole are a good couple but I didn't feel the romance until they were together. I missed the sparks, the tension and the mystery (and if there was any, it wasn't enough).

The other thing I didn't like was the paranormal element which it was minimum but it still wasn't necessary if you ask me.

Overall, the story has a good outcome and everything is answered. I had a hard time getting into the story but after a few chapters I started to enjoy it.
