“I made you a promise, Charlie.” Mark’s already deep voice is layered with desire.
Once again, my control begins to slip. “What’s that?”
His hands drop a little lower beside my head. His lower body shifts so his knee is between my legs. I feel his arousal against my thigh.
My traitorous body shows its own awakening. My nipples hardening through the silk material don’t go unnoticed. Heat pools in my core and my breath hitches. I want him. There’s no use denying it.
“I told you I’d kiss you again. If you don’t stop me now, there’s no getting away.”
I should stop him. I need to stop him. There’s no way in hell it’s going to happen, though. I’m craving his lips again.
He gives me one second before he crushes his mouth against mine. His entire body shifts forward, and now I’m trapped. There’s nowhere to go. Nowhere to move that’s not Mark. He takes every part of my mind and body. Our hands roam each other as his tongue slides against mine. Passion ignites between us; it sets the room on fire. His fingers cup my neck and then glide down the front of my dress. His hand brands my skin as he takes his time exploring the open skin between us.
My fingers grip the lapels of his tux, holding him, molding him to me. I can’t get close enough. Our mouths stay fused as we both lose control.
Then my mind snaps.
I push back and my hands fly to my lips. They’re swollen, bruised from the force of the kiss. His hands brace against the wall. I keep my eyes downcast. I can’t believe I just did that, against the damn wall, at a ball commemorating my father.
I shift my dress, rake my fingers through my hair, and pull myself together.
“Charlie . . .” Mark finally speaks. It sounds like shouting even though it’s only loud enough for us to hear.
“That was the last time that will ever happen,” I say with no tremor to my voice. “Tonight we become partners. It’s not about whatever this is.” I shift my hands between us. “It’s about finding the information we’re both searching for.”
“And what if we find something else?”
“We shut it down. There’s no room for feelings in this world.”
Mark pushes back, giving me space. I instantly feel cold. “Okay, then. Have it your way.”
This is what I wanted, what we both need, but suddenly I wish it wasn’t. I wish I could pull him close, kiss him, fuck him, and just feel.
But wishes are for little girls.

‘Defenseless’ is a stand-alone book written by the amazing Corinne Michaels. Yes, you’ve read right is a stand-alone which means no cliffhangers and tears at the end waiting for the next book. However, the book has as much power and romance as any duet written by her. This is a concentrated dose of love, adrenaline, sexiness, and surprises.

This time is the turn of Mark (“Twilight”) and Charlie. The story takes places a year after the events that took place during the ‘Consolidation Duet’. Charlie is CIA agent who is after a dangerous terrorist guilty of murdering her father. She and Mark will have to work together to discover who is behind the attacks to their friends and why. The story has a different tone than other books by Corinne because this time both characters are accustomed to danger. Both Mark and Charlie are fearless and take their job seriously. They will do what it’s takes to achieve their goals. There is more action torture, blood, chasing and the adrenaline is always pumping.

There is an undeniable attraction and the tension is too high. The sex scenes are steamy and hot. The temperature goes to the roof whenever they are alone. There were scenes that remind me of ‘Beloved’, especially when they are behaving as stubborn kids and deny their feelings.

As usual, the writing is flawless and the story is really appealing. It’s easy to get lost in the reading and forgetting about the real world.

It definitely can be read as a stand-alone book but we have glimpses of the other characters we love so much. There is one event we have been waiting since reading the first book that was beautiful and emotional (I'm sure fans know what I'm talking about).

TITLE: Convicton
SERIES: The Consolation Duet #2
AUTHOR: Corinne Michaels
RELEASE DATE: May 27th 2015
PUBLISHER: BAAE Publishing

I fell in love with Liam only to be left shattered into a million pieces. Again. The idea of being without him cripples me but the reality is, he’s gone.
He doesn’t understand and I can’t make him.
If only he’d see the conviction behind my words—then he’d still be here.

'Conviction' is everything we expected to be and more. It's the perfect conclusion for a love story that makes us shed a tear or two. It's full of drama, sorrow, hurt feelings but there is also a lot of happiness.

I honestly don't know why it took me so long to read the conclusion of Liam and Natalie’s story. Maybe after the heartbreaking finale of 'Consolidation' I couldn't find the courage to read what the future had in store for these two and that’s why I waited.

The book picks up immediately after the end of the first book. There is hardly a breath between the two books. The passing is fast and it's almost impossible to put it down. The tension between Natalie, Liam and Aaron is unbearable. Their relationship is hanging by a thread and there moments where the emotions are too much.

I love Natalie, her strength is admirable. She had to go through hell and back and still she stands up straight for her and her baby. She is decided to be happy no matter what and she deserves it more than anyone. Liam is adorable and perfect but he can be so annoying when he is determined to do what’s right.

The dual POV was a great choice because that way we can see the whole picture and Liam’s voice is addictive. As usual, Corinne writing style is flawless. The book has a high sexual component and it's awesome. She creates the right atmosphere and the scenes flow naturally.

Corinne did a tremendous job creating a story that touches our hearts and leaves us speechless after reading it. The emotions come to life and leave the pages to become vivid entities.

Review: The Air He Breathes @BrittainyCherry

TITLE:  The Air He Breathes
SERIES: Elements #1
AUTHOR: Brittainy C. Cherry
RELEASE DATE: September 15th 2015
FORMAT: Ebook & Paperback

I was warned about Tristan Cole.
“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”
It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.
But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.
We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.
Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

Brittainy Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath. She graduated from Carroll University with a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Creative Writing. She loves to take part in writing screenplays, acting, and dancing--poorly of course. Coffee, chai tea, and wine are three things that she thinks every person should partake in! Brittainy lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her family. When she's not running a million errands and crafting stories, she's probably playing with her adorable pets.

This is the first book I pre-ordered without knowing anything about the author or the book. However, there was something on the cover that made me want to read it. I don’t know if it was the black and white photograph or the male model or just the title. I’m glad I followed my guts and got a copy because this one is a really good book.

The Air He Breathes is an emotional story about two broken souls and their way back to life. Elizabeth and Tristan have lost their significant others.

Elizabeth grew up witnessing how her mum turned to dating and men to deal with her husband death. So when she has to face the same fate she decides to be stronger for her daughter. Elizabeth has a sweet five-year-old girl with a sassy attitude. She brings a lot of tenderness and funny jokes to the story. Then we have Tristan. He seems harsh, cold and maybe violent at first. But we see him coming out of this shell that he created to hide the pain to become a protective, strong man.

Reading about their loved ones and their death was touching and heartbreaking. The author did a great job transmitting the sadness and sorrow. The atmosphere starts charged with pain, fury and angst but as the story moves on, the air becomes lighter and we can see light in all the darkness.

The romance of course is not easy and sweet. It’s turbulent and dramatic at first. Actually, they don’t like each other but they are what the other needs: a rock to hold on during hard times. They heal together and learn to breathe again. It’s only then that they allow themselves to love.
The ending brings a lot of hurtful revelations that takes us to dramatic and exciting moments. There was a minor thing that sounded forced but still the book has a spectacular outcome.
If you like emotional stories, dark characters and believe in healing, this book is for you.

There's a serial killer preying on other serial killers - some known by law enforcement, others well off radar. With each passing day, "The Iron Eagle" moves with impunity through the streets of Los Angeles in search of his prey. O'Brian and Hoffman create an elite task force with the sole purpose of catching "The Eagle" and bringing him to justice. But the deeper they delve, the more apparent it is that he may very well be one of their own. As the two men stare into the abyss of their search, the eyes of "The Iron Eagle" stare back.

*Content Warning: The Iron Eagle Crime novel series contains mature subject matter, graphic violence, sexual content, language, torture and other scenes that may be disturbing to sensitive readers. This series is not intended for anyone under the age of eighteen, reader discretion is advised.

On May 11, 1995, at 30, Roy’s life was irrevocably changed. After walking into the hospital, he was admitted and later received the worst possible diagnosis – Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. His doctors gave him two years to live, and he left the hospital in a wheelchair. After battling Multiple Sclerosis for nearly 16 years, Roy began devoting his energies and passions to the full-time art of storytelling. His disability has brought with it an unforeseen blessing. He can finally take medications to alleviate some of the pain from his MS and focus on the pleasures of character creation and the joys of putting words to paper.

As an author, Roy A. Teel Jr. is very diverse, and his works include both fiction and nonfiction. His previous works include The Way, The Truth, and The Lies: How the Gospels Mislead Christians about Jesus’ True Message (2005), Against The Grain: The American Mega-Church and its Culture of Control (2008), Light of Darkness: Dialogues in Death(2008), and And God Laughed (2013).

In 2014, Roy began publishing his latest and largest project – a 15-book geographically-centered hard-boiled, mystery, suspense, thriller crime series: “The Iron Eagle Series.” The main character, a former Marine Corps Black Operative turned rogue FBI agent, hunts serial killers in Los Angeles. Each novel addresses different subjects, and while fiction, all titles deal with real world subject matter. “The Iron Eagle Series” is not about things that can’t hurt you. Roy lives in Lake Arrowhead, CA with his wife and children. Readers can connect with him on FacebookTwitter, andGoodreads.

'Rise of the Iron Eagle' is a phenomenal suspense crime story with spectacular characters and detailed murders. This is the first of what it looks like an excellent series.

Detective Jim O'Brian and Special Agent Steve Hoffman are long time friends and have worked together for years. Serial killers have always been part of their job but when a serial killer with a special MO appears, their lives will not be the same. The Iron Eagle dedicates his time to find and kill other serial killers.

The author uses detailed descriptions of both places and characters. He creates a complete world with a solid plot and a flawless storyline. The crimes are hard to read because the author describes them meticulously. The killings are rough and brutal.

The characters are complex and they continue evolving as the story moves on. Each one, including the killers, has motivations and real personalities.

I absolutely loved that the author lets us know the Iron Eagle identity from the beginning. It’s both exciting and exasperating because there were moments that I wanted to shout to the characters things like “HE is the Iron Eagle” , “Don’t trust him”, it was like watching a horror movie and trying to help the next victim.

Overall, it’s an excellent crime story, full of action and blood. The rhythm is fast and it’s hard to stop reading.

Author interview: Claire Fullerton @cfullerton3

Let's welcome author Claire Fullerton. She is here to talk about her books 'Dancing to an Irish Reel' and 'A portal in Time", her dogs and more.
So here it goes....

Ruty: Hello and welcome to my blog. Thanks for the interview :)
Claire: Thank you! I am thrilled to be here on your blog, which is refreshingly engaging!

Ruty: Let’s start talking about your books,
You have two books published by Vinspire Publishing. Can you tell us a bit about them?

Claire: Both books found the perfect home with Vinspire Publishing, who embraced both according to the quality of the story. “A Portal in Time” is a paranormal mystery and has an unusual premise, in that it is written in alternating chapters in two different time frames: one being modern day, and the other beginning in the year 1902. It is set in a small town called Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is on the Monterey Peninsula in California’s central coast. There is something rather haunting and historic about the region, in that it is like a Tudor village set amongst pine trees and Cyprus groves by the sea. The climate is typically misty and other-worldly, which influences the story of a young woman who visits Carmel with her husband, on their one year anniversary, and can’t shake the uncanny feeling that she has been there before. The story reads like two parallel mysteries, wherein the two time periods fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

“Dancing to an Irish Reel” is contemporary fiction and is written in the first person, in the voice of twenty-five year old Hailey Crossan, who leaves the record business in Los Angeles and takes a trip to the west coast of Ireland. Unexpectedly, Hailey is offered a job at a little start-up music business in Galway and quickly accepts, which means she finds a little house to rent in rural Connemara and settles into a life-style where everything is unusual to her and new in this breathtaking, pastoral region. As she goes about her business, she meets a regionally famous Irish musician named Liam Hennessey, who is clearly attracted to her, but because Hailey is an outsider and because Liam has never had a serious girl-friend, he is so unbalanced that he can’t decide whether to come closer or run away! “Dancing to an Irish Reel” is about the uncertainty and ambiguity of new love between two people from differing cultures.

Ruty: How long took you to write each one?
Claire: Both books took a year to write, revise, edit, revise again three more times then submit.

Ruty: What inspire you to write them?
Claire: I am inspired by the idea of a good story. With "A Portal in Time," the idea came when my husband and I took a trip to Carmel, California and stayed in an historic hotel. I kept thinking the hotel looked as if it was once somebody’s house. It was situated on manicured grounds facing the sea, and had a huge, flagstone floor lobby with a stately fireplace and a Mediterranean tiled staircase that swept to the level above. There were sepia tinted framed pictures on the wall that dated back to the hotel’s inception. People stood posing in period clothing beside horse-drawn carriages, and upon asking the hotel’s concierge about the hotel’s history, he presented me with a photograph album, and I discovered that the hotel did indeed begin as somebody’s house! I started formulating the premise of “A Portal in Time” as I stood in the hotel’s lobby, and much of the story is centered upon the mysterious lobby stairs and the main character’s intuition and unsettling sense of déjà vu.

And as for “Dancing to an Irish Reel,” the truth is I actually spent a year living on the western coast of Ireland. The experience was everything one would hope to get out of living as a stranger in a strange land, where the people are so friendly and charming and the landscape is so vast and gorgeous that it colors every waking moment of the day. I love everything about the west of Ireland: its cultural nuances and social mores are so different from America that I wanted to write a story that sang its praises. And the push and pull and uncertainty of new love is something I wanted to write about because we all go through it at one time or another. The road to love, or the road to connection, wherein both people are excited and hopeful, but also uncertain and a little anxious as they try to read each other is a subject I rarely see in a novel. I wanted to write about the friends who surround us during such a time; how they aid and support us and often times serve as confidants and interpreters during confusing times. This is why the title is “Dancing to an Irish Reel!” the entire story is like an Irish dance!

Ruty: They are two different genres, contemporary fiction and the other paranormal mystery. Do you have a preference?
Claire:  Yes, I do. I prefer to write in the first person and I like to write, as well as read fiction that is outside of a particular genre. I like fiction that is true to life and says something about living and the attendant emotions one experiences, as opposed to a fantastic story, if you will. This makes it easier to relate to a book, in my opinion. I like the idea of a reader personally connecting to the characters as they read about their predicament, so that they can compare notes and examine their own life.

Ruty: You have a new book coming out, don’t you? What can you tell us about it?
Claire:  I can tell you that I have completed my third novel, and that it is a Southern family saga set in 1970’s and 1980’s Memphis, Tennessee. I am still fine-tuning the book. I am one of those writers who painstakingly and repeatedly goes over the book to exhaustive degrees!

Ruty: Now let’s talk about you?
You have to German Shepherds and they look super cute by their pictures. I need to know why the names: Ceili and Ronin.
Claire: You have now touched upon my favorite subject! I love my dogs; they are the center of my universe and the good news is my husband feels the same! We have a blast with our pair of German shepherds. Ceili and Ronin are our second team, after we lived with Secret ( name came from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) and Shadow, who were both females and lived with us for eleven and a half years. When Shadow died  (which broke our hearts) we got Ceili, which is the Irish word for “a musical party.” The name sounds like “Kay-lee” and has personal resonance for me, since I lived in Ireland. We got Ronin after Secret died. He is our first male shepherd, and he is art-work! He was a German import puppy, and the name is Irish (only in Ireland, it is spelled Ronan.) But there is a movie starring Robert DeNiro that takes place in Europe called Ronin, and I looked up the name to discover it means a Samurai warrior who has gone rogue, as in left the troops and gone out on his own. I thought the name seemed brave and masculine. Both shepherds are almost two years old now.  I will now offer to show pictures of all our shepherds by sending you to my Pinterest presence where there is a board named “My German shepherds.” https://www.pinterest.com/cffullerton/

Ruty: What’s your favorite writing scenario?
Claire: I like noiseless, uninterrupted privacy. I have my own writing room in our house, and it is perfect because there is a floor to ceiling glass wall that looks out to the Pacific Ocean.

Ruty: If you have to choose a place to live for the rest of your live, where would it be?
Claire: I would love to divide my time between California, Tennessee, and Ireland. I love California, but I also love the American South because it is where I grew up. And Ireland will always have a place in my heart.

Ruty: I saw that you really like Ireland. It’s one of the places I want to visit some time, what’s your favorite thing about Ireland?
Claire:  The way it feels to be there. For one thing, it is historically preserved and at every juncture, one feels connected to the land. Even in Ireland’s cities, one feels a rural quality just around the corner. In outlying areas, there is always a sense of the dramatic sea. The architecture is ancient and preserved. There are a multitude of castles peppered throughout the countryside that are dated back hundreds of years that give you an idea of Ireland’s history. And the locals are proud and well informed of their lineage, and because they are the friendly sort, who are embracing of tourists, travelling throughout Ireland is like an historic tutorial! And the green of the island is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. They say there are 52 colors of green in Ireland, and I think that may be a conservative number. The land is absolutely spectacular and is a walker’s paradise. And now I will mention the Irish people: they are funny, wickedly smart, authentic, unpretentious, and fundamentally happy. I will venture to generalize now and say that for anyone who visits Ireland, they’ll feel as if it is home. And lastly, I have to mention Irish music; it is the cultural glue that binds, and most of the Irish play one instrument or another, and play it well. Irish traditional music is specific to and exemplary of the Irish personality and culture. It is the soul of Irish character and Irish pride. Irish music is passed down through generations. There is something haunting and magical about it in its execution. In summation, all I can say is you have to go!

My life is a secret. His life is dangerous. We’re both stubborn, calculating, and controlling.Mark Dixon doesn’t know what he’s getting into. He doesn’t know his games could cost us our lives. I have to do what is necessary to keep us alive, and that means guarding my heart. But I know I’m defenseless against him, and in the end, he’ll force me to surrender.

I look around because the hair on the back of my neck prickles. “We need to get out of here.” Someone is here, watching, listening, and now it’s time to do what I do best. “I’ve missed you.” I smile while I use the tip of my finger to trace his jawline.
Mark’s eyes shift over my head as he pulls me flush against his body. We’re both facing exits. “I’ve missed you more,” he plays along.
This might just work. He’s on alert as well and senses something awry. His fingers splay across my lower back as he holds me close. “Maybe we should head back to my place so you can show me just how much.” I glance over his shoulder. His blonde hair falls in his eyes as he dips his head into my neck. I know the move, but a shiver runs down my spine.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I release a very low moan, which I didn’t give permission to escape. Mark’s lips glide across my skin.
I’m not sure he’s acting.
I’m not even sure that I am.
Then Mark reminds me this is serious. “There are two guys behind you.” His voice is low enough that only I can hear him. To anyone passing, we’re two lovers reacquainting ourselves. “One at my two o’clock, and the other is out of my view.”
“One just passed behind you twice. I think going toward my exit is best.” I snuggle closer. “I’m ready when you are.” The double meaning is meant for anyone to hear, but Mark should know it means I’m ready to disappear. “You’ll have to keep up, though.”
He leans back while cupping my face. His lips hover over mine. “I don’t have any problems keeping you satisfied, princess.”
My pulse spikes. I know he can hear it, feel it, see in my eyes that I’m affected. My breaths are shallow as his hands slowly make their way down my arms.
“Arrogant prick,” I mutter.
I can tell he’d be an incredible lover. His overconfidence would only play to my benefit. We’re both cut from the same cloth, ready to fight for dominance. He’d win, though. I can see it in his eyes. There would be no battle, Mark has already won. Right now, he controls me. He determines whether we kiss, what it’ll be like, and for the first time in my life—I surrender.
His lips come closer. “They’re closing in,” he whispers, his eyes locked on me. “Charlie?” he asks.
“What?” My voice is barely audible.
“This will happen again when we don’t have to fight off people, and then you’ll be mine.”
I don’t have time to reply. His lips crash down on mine as he spins me around so he leads our exit. The second our mouths collide, my brain disconnects. My fingers tangle in his hair, grabbing it to pull him close. Mark’s hands hold my face to his and he continues to guide me. I know we’re moving but I have no idea to where. In this instant, I don’t care. Never has someone made me feel so desperate for them. I never lose control, never feel so lost, yet right now, I am. I’m raw, exposed, and completely vulnerable.
