Blog Tour: Grimnirs - Review & Giveaway

Book Title:  Grimnirs
Series:  A Runes Novel
Author:  Ednah Walters
Release Date:  December 2nd 2013
Genre:  YA Paranormal Romance
Publisher:  Firetrail Publishing
Presented by:  As You Wish Tours
Banner Made by:  Jamie Turner-Norton

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.
Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

MY REVIEW.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Grimnirs is the bridge between book two and three in the Runes series. This novella is by far the best story in the series. Sexy, addictive, emotional and entertaining this story is exactly what you were expecting and more.

This is Cora's story. She is now the leading lady and not only Raine's BFF. She takes the reins of her life to submerge in a dangerous ride with a sexy dark soul reaper (or as he corrects her every time, a Grimnir). Getting back to her old life after a visit to the psychiatric ward turns out to be a crazy experience because something strange happened while she was gone. And Echo's appearance only makes it crazier.

It's a fast story with great characters. Cora's personality takes a deeper level and we discover new sides of her. She becomes a tridimensional person with a cheerful, funny, sarcastic and loving personality. Echo is the perfect partner for her, a cocky and hot grimnir that presents the Valkyrie world to her.

The story has two moments, a first one where everything is chaotic and Cora doesn't understand anything around her. Then, when she gets an explanation from Raine and the others the story picks up speed.

The novella has the excellent and modern language that Ednah uses in most of her books, using daily technology and pop culture to create a real and complete world.

Unlike the other two books this one has a higher temperature. There is a huge dose of sexual tension and the sparkles fly at all times. Cora and Echo share a mature and sexy relationship with all the drama we love in Ednah's books.

Another good thing about this installment is that we get to see where the other characters are standing. We read about Raine, Eirik and my favorite, Torin.

Overall, this is an excellent paranormal YA novella and a MUST for Runes fans.

Enemy Territory - Review

The last week of January has began. Time really does fly by. I'm taking the time to read the books I requested from NETGALLEY and Enemy Territory is one of them.

Enemy Territory
by Sharon McKay

Trained to hate, two boys discover friendship instead.

Sam, an Israeli teen whose leg may have to be amputated, and Yusuf, a Palestinian teen who has lost his left eye, find themselves uneasy roommates in a Jerusalem hospital. One night, the boys decide to slip away while the nurses aren't looking and go on an adventure to the Old City.

The escapade turns dangerous when they realize they're hopelessly lost. As they navigate the dark city-one of them limping and the other half-blind-their suspicions of each other are diverted. They band together to ?nd their way home and to defend themselves against unfriendly locals, arrest by the military police, and an encounter with a deadly desert snake. The boys' attempts to understand each other and the politics that divide them mirror the longstanding conflict in the Middle East.

This powerful story, touched with humor, demonstrates how individual friendships and experiences can triumph over enormous cultural and political differences and lead to understanding and compassion.

MY REVIEW

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In a war you are taught that the enemy is the bad guy and you have to hate the people on the other side. But sometimes in a war there are no good and bad, death is part of it and the pain and suffering touches all the members in the conflict.

Enemy Territory is a beautiful story about fear, hate, hope and above all humanity. It helps us see how we create demons with the faces of our enemies forgetting that we have the same essence. We are all people who hurt, cry, laugh, dream and love.

Sam, an Israeli boy, and Yusuf, a Palestinian, meet in a hospital after both are injured in different accidents. At first their prejudices will keep them apart but once they start communicate they will discover a great friendship. When they set on an adventure through the Old city of Jerusalem, the paths will take them to unexpected places.

Sam and Yusuf will learn that despite all their differences they are equals in many ways. Between discussion and fights, stereotypes, misconceptions, myths and wrong ideas will be put over the table.

The descriptions are excellent as well as the dialogues. The action and movement are perfect so is easy to get into the story and feel in your own skin the feelings and motivations behind the characters’ actions. The author creates tridimensional characters, which are likeable and human. With flaws and all they become heroes in their own lives.

A great book that shows a current topic that touch us all no matter what part of the planet we live in. This is an ancient conflict with so many consequences and no solution at sight.

Overall, Enemy Territory is an excellent book. Ideal for all ages because is a good way to learn while enjoying a fantastic story.

Ring of Fire - Review

Hello and welcome back!
I had this book for more than a year, I won it on a giveaway and it was time to read it. I started it three times (I'm not lying) but I finally got to finish it a few weeks ago.

Ring of Fire
by Noelle M. Kalipetis

Ring of Fire
Lana Williams's life is tough enough without having to deal with things that don't exist.
Between surviving the day-to-day abuses of a drug-crazed mother and the unwanted attention of the school bully, she's got her hands full, and there's not time to deal with the strange images she sees in the mirror one day, visions of a past in flames, a future in trouble.

 MY REVIEW.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Lana was just an abused child when she found out she had amazing powers. Daughter of a drug addict, victim of physical and psychological abuses and bullied in school, the twelve-year-old girl was having a tough life when dark forces killed her mother. After being sent to Ireland with an aunt she never knew, Lana discovered a supernatural world where magic, vampires and gods are real.

The story then moves 10 years into the future (I won’t spoil anything by explaining why this happens), and now Lana is a grown up woman escaping of her past. From then on, the story moves fast and a lot of characters come to scene.

The story has some obvious elements like the "chosen one" concept, an old prophesy and the fight between good and evil. However, it is a quite funny book and presents a well thought background.

Also, there are some great characters. For example, Lunetta’s personality is amazing, she is really funny and some of her comments are hilarious. Erik is a good addition and his relationship with Lana is one of the best parts of the book. It’s a bit predictable but romantic nonetheless.

The writing is good, the dialogues too and the scenarios are well described. Overall, the author created a world that feels complete.

My only complaint is Lana’s behavior when the book starts, I know she is a victim and all but somehow she manages to be a bit annoying and then she overcomes her mother’s death in a blink of an eye. Don’t get me wrong, she suffers but the story moves to more important scenes and doesn’t give her time to grieve. Maybe that’s why I started three times to read it but left it aside after a few pages.

Just so you know, being the first of a series there are some questions left unanswered and if you want to know what comes next you will have to read book two.

Tempting Trouble - Review

Hello and welcome back :)
Today's review is for a book I got from Netgalley. My thanks to the publisher for sending it.

Tempting Trouble
by Savannah Stuart
Tempting Trouble
Story 1: Tempting Witness
When Madison Dubois witnesses a terrible crime, she goes to the only place she knows she'll be safe, Detective Rafe Jackson's house. Rafe has been in love with Madison Dubois for longer than he cares to admit. Unfortunately for him, she views him as a big brother. Or so he thinks. When she shows up on his doorstep terrified for her life, he has no choice but to keep her safe. Undeniable sparks fly when they’re forced to share a roof but unless he can keep her alive, their relationship might not have a chance to even start.  *Novella length*

Story 2: Better Late Than Never (bonus short story)
For the past year Randall Phillips has kept his distance from sexy Lindsay Taylor. When she’s in a car accident, everything is put into perspective and he throws all his rules out the window.
They share a heated kiss but for the weeks she’s on temporary leave she ignores his calls. Now that it’s her first day back at work, he plans to convince her they’re meant to be together. When he finally gets her alone he shows her all the physical pleasures she’s been missing out on. Can he convince her he’s playing for keeps?

MY REVIEW.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tempting Trouble is a set of two stories, the novella Tempting Witness and the short story Better Late than Never. Either one of them is really good, sexy, with nice characters and with a high temperature.

Tempting Witness is the story of Madison and Rafe. They have known each other for most of their life, her brother's best friend, Rafe, has always been the subject of Madison's fantasies. His friend's little sister has become in a wonderful woman. Both have thought about the other in a "more than friends" way. However, is not up until she witnesses a serious crime that fate brings them together.

Being a novella there is no much time for developing tridimensional characters, however, there are a few glimpses of past events to create a more complete story. Is easy to imagine why Rafe stayed away from her and why now seems the perfect time to make a move. I didn’t like much Madison mainly because she goes from never having sex to this really sexual person. I can understand that maybe she never found the right partner before but for me if she was a virgin or not wasn't a big difference for the story.

The story moves really fast (maybe because of the length or just because is what the author intended) and there is no relevant tension, present in many erotic books. Yet the scenes are so good that you can skip the fact that they get together after a few pages.

Each scene brings something new and exciting. They are well written, they have a good rhythm and the author creates a sexy atmosphere without being cheap or trashy.

The short story, Better Late than Never, is a good bonus. Despite the short length is easy to see where the characters are standing and the story flows naturally. This story does have a bit of tension and the temperature starts rising from the first word. Again the sex scenes are well written and are easy to read.

Overall, Tempting Trouble is an easy and entertaining book to read. It won’t take much of your time but it surely will leave you pleased if you like this type of stories.

Sentient (The Mentalist Series #2) - Review

Hello and HAPPY MONDAY!!!

Sentient is book two in the series written by the lovely Kenechi. I had the chance to be a BETA reader for this book (I was a Beta for the first too). I like the way the story is heading and I can't wait for the next book.
Here is my review for book one: HERE.

Sentient (The Mentalist Series #2)
by Kenechi Udogu
Sentient (The Mentalist Series, #2)
Mastering her Progressive Empath abilities isn’t going as well as Gemma hoped. In fact, months after finding out what she really is, she still has no clue what this truly means. All she can do is wait to see if any new abilities will eventually manifest. Things aren’t going great with Russ either. Unsure of how to handle her Sentient Link with him, she tries to integrate herself in his busy social life but struggles to adjust to her new circumstances.

When she is plagued by recurring nightmares, Gemma realises things are changing and knows she has to do something, fast. The arrival of two sets of strangers in town, both offering the much needed assistance she needs to unearth her powers, escalates the situation even further. Gemma attempts to decipher whose intentions are genuine, but does she have enough time to figure out who has her best interest at heart?

MY REVIEW.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sentient brings back Gemma to Sandes, this time alone because her father is out there looking for clues and information about what it means to be a Sentient twin. With more powers to discover, a new threat and the intense attraction for Russ, is no easy to be a simple teenager girl.

This book shows us other sides of the characters and we finally get to know them a bit more. Gemma is still a very likeable character. She is very mature and focused for a girl of her age, however, she has moments of insecurity, doubt and fear which is understandable because she is just a young girl fighting alone with the unknown. Russ is her rock, she holds on to him when things get too rough but at the same time she does everything and anything to protect him. He is the perfect companion for her and just as Gemma he is very mature for his age.

The chemistry between the characters is very sweet and is good to explore their relationship. Gemma’s reservations towards Russ feelings are for me what make the story real. When you are a teenager, you question everything around you and I think the author makes a great work writing about this aspect of the characters.

The story moves fast and with a steady rhythm, there is a lot of action and surprises with every new chapter. Every new character is refreshing, some of them bring new powers and more information about a world we are still discovering.

The author creates a solid, enjoyable and complete world but she unravels it piece by piece. The mystery about this paranormal world is always present and you can never have enough.

Overall, Sentient is a great sequel. Full of the action and drama we love in a YA book, with romance and revelations. This book only makes us eager for more.

Breathing Ghosts - Review

Hello!
Today is raining here so it seems the perfect time for a new review :)
Laekan is one of those author who doesn't have the success she deserves. She writes amazing books, full of emotion and real situations. I love everything she writes so here is my review of her latest YA book.
You should check out her other books. BTW, thanks to her for sending a copy!

Breathing Ghosts
by Laekan Zea Kemp
Breathing Ghosts
She is a winding cosmos, bleeding and bursting into night. She is a dream. She is dead.

River has just lost the one thing that matters most to him—Nia—and all she's left behind is a pile of scribbled love notes detailing their past and a pin-holed map planning out their future. Hopes and dreams confined to one dimension now that she's gone and River’s too afraid to leave his hometown, crippled by the same anxiety that’s plagued his mother for as long as he can remember.

But after a strange encounter with the only girl he ever loved a week after laying her to rest, River, armed with nothing but her map and his memories, decides to finally leave and never look back. And with the help of a pair of eccentrically named siblings as well as a mutt with three legs, he sets out to do the very thing Nia always knew how to do better than he ever could—live.

From the moonlit beaches off of Florida's east coast, to the forests of Mississippi, to Bourbon Street, Cadillac Ranch, and the Arizona desert, River is faced with not only Nia's ghost but his own and he learns that in life there are no accidents, only miracles.

MY REVIEW.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are stories that leave you in a vulnerable place, that touch some parts of you in unexpected ways. These stories shake our cores, makes us cry or just let us speechless. Breathing Ghosts is one of those stories. A dark, sad and revealing journey through a young man memories and the adventure he sets on.

After the death of his girlfriend Nia, River finds himself lost with nowhere to go with only a map she used to have and where she dreamt about all the places she would go and some of her drawings. This is no simple story, there is no happy ending because when we are dealing with real life, pain and suffering are going to be present but this doesn’t mean it’s going to be a bad ride.

River is a boy who simply is afraid of going away, of the world, of taking chances, he is just afraid of living. Nia spent hours talking to him about the places they would see, the things they would do and how happy they would be. With glimpses of the past we can see how their relationship was, we get to recreate the past to make sense of the present we are in.

Along the way River meets a couple of twins who are as lost as him. June and Carter are the perfect companion for a boy who is broken because they have a troubled past and a blurry future.

Breathing ghost is no light story; it will take put you in contact with dark feelings, with uncertain decisions and with some characters so real that everything that hits them will hit you too. Their grief is so well written, the story is touching and is easy to relate with the characters.

This author has the power to create magnificent worlds, real and solid, with characters you love. Through her words she transmits human emotions without any filter. It might not be easy to read but let me tell you it is worth it.

Book of the Month: December & 2014 Resolutions

Welcome to Book of the month :)

We are now in week two of this new year and I think is time for some resolutions. I'm not a big planner, I prefer living day by day. However, last year my reading and reviewing was a caos at certain point so in order to prevent all that I will write myself some "resolutions'.

Also I know this year will be crazy because I will be working full time and studying so imagine how hard it will be to read and blog between all that.

Anyway, here are some resolutions for this 2014:
1 - Lower my TBR-list (I did this actually because I lower my list from 600 to 500, I know is not much but is a start)
2 - Read more books only for fun (which means accepting less review request or be more selective in what I choose)
3 - Plan my posts at least one week in advance (trust me, blogging is a lot easier if you plan and write reviews with time to correct and check)
4 - Read at least 20 books from my TBR-list (I know, why do I have a TBR-list if I'm not going to read the books in it, I always end up reading books that are not on my list)

AND NOW...

As you know I used to participate on an event hosted by BOOK WHALES where the main idea was to share the best book we read the previous month. I would like to continue with the idea, so from now on every first Monday of each new month I will post the best book from the month before.

Venice in the Moonlight - Review

Hello and welcome again :)
It's time for the first review of the year, it was easy to chose the first book because I read this one a few days ago and I loved it. I'm a fan of historical romances so when the author asked me to review her book I said YES!
This is a great book and if you enjoy this genre, you should give it a go.

Venice in the Moonlight
by Elizabeth McKenna
Venice in the Moonlight
Considered useless by his cold-hearted father, Nico Foscari, eldest son of one of the founding families in Venice, hides his pain behind gambling, drinking and womanizing.

After her husband’s untimely demise, Marietta Gatti returns to her hometown of Venice in hopes of starting a new life and finding the happiness that was missing in her forced marriage.

When Fate throws them together, friendship begins to grow into love until Marietta learns a Foscari family secret that may have cost her father his life. Now, she must choose between vengeance, forgiveness, and love.

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel takes you back to the days of eighteenth century Carnival, where lovers meet discreetly, and masks make everyone equal.

MY REVIEW.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Venice in the Moonlight is an attractive historical romance with all the ingredients to be a must read in the genre. Murder, secret alliances, a brave woman and a seducer are the ingredients of a story that you won’t be able to put down.

After losing her husband and being banished by her mother-in-law, Marietta comes back to her hometown only to find out that her father is dead and maybe his death was no accident. An encounter with some English travelers and a man from one of the wealthiest families in Venice will set in motion the search for the truth behind her father’s death.

Marietta is a likeable character, a woman forced to marry a man she didn’t love, who had to face the aversion of her husband’s family and after his demise is send away with nothing but her art and a loyal best friend. Nico is a classical seducer, a man whose goal in life is pleasure himself with women, alcohol and expending the family money. A closer friend of the famous Casanova, he is everything she should stay away from.

The dynamic between these two characters is extraordinary, intense, romantic and funny. Their relationship moves fast and is easy to read about it while enjoying it a lot.

The mystery and intrigued is well built, the suspense is always present and every page unravels something new. The great writing style and the references to the old Venice create a complete and solid world. There are also great secondary characters, each one bringing something special to the story.

A thing worth mentioning is the exquisite cover. Just by looking at it I knew I had to read this book, it is simply beautiful. The Carnival and its masks present clearly a magical scenario for a wonderful story.

Overall, Venice in the Moonlight is an excellent historical romance that will not disappoint you. With great characters, a brilliant background, a solid plot and everything you expect in this genre.
