What if your destiny lay on the other side of death?
The annual Culling ceremony is a day every coming-of-age novice looks forward to within the Primeval Coven. It’s the start to being initiated into the Night Watchmen, humankind’s protectors, and it’s the long-awaited day when novices discover if they’re a Hunter or a Witch.
But this day is not a happy one for Faye Middleton. Not when she’s known her whole life that she’s a Defect and is about to face banishment in front of her fellow novices. She’s forced to attend the Culling with little hope for her future, but what she discovers about herself is far worse than she could’ve imagined. And far more dangerous.
Thrown into training and separated from her friends, Faye must learn to adjust. She struggles to find her place within the Coven, and with Jaxen Gramm, the darkly handsome and extremely unnerving man assigned to watch and protect her. Emotions run high, and when she discovers a deadly secret about him, her struggles deepen. As corruption within the Coven begins to unravel, Faye pieces together her role in saving the future of her people, and within Jaxen’s life...but will the truth save her, or be her undoing?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This paranormal romance is an exciting story of a girl with the power to change the status quo. In a world where witches and magic are real, Faye has grown up believing she is a Defect. Inside the Coven every person has a role because you are either a Witch or a Hunter, and the Culling is the moment where your life is sealed. However, Faye comes to prove things are not always what you expect. The legend of the Everlasting comes true when it’s discover that Faye has both powers inside her.

The book has great characters. Faye is a kick-ass heroin, fearless, strong and caring. She is a force to reckon and has to face really tough moments. Even when she doubts, hesitate and questions her decisions, we read about an admirable girl with a great sense of what’s right. Then we have Jaxen, of course he comes to be the mysterious hot man she is attracted to. However, he is so intriguing and has a well-built personality that becomes a relevant character on his own.

There are great secondary characters and each one brings something to the story. Some are funny, others are good friends and a few are really annoying people.

This book has all the elements that are becoming recurrent on the new adult genre like a lot of sexual tension. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, it’s one of the best aspect of the book. The tension between Faye and Jaxen is breathtaking, sparks fly in every scene and you only want more.

The rhythm is another issue because for me is really unsteady. For moments, the action flows fast and the dialogues come naturally, the scenes go by quickly and you start to feel the adrenaline. But then from one chapter to another, the energy drops down and the story pass slowly. I think that maybe it was to accomplish a sensation of reality because life is not always exhilarating.

The narration is very descriptive and engaging. The dialogues feel real and the way characters behave goes according to their age. I really like how poetic Faye is sometimes, when she describes her feelings she uses a lot of metaphors, which I loved.

The paranormal aspect is amazing, the different part of the Coven are well explained. It’s easy to figure who is who, what powers they have and the role they play. There are paranormal creatures such as vampires and werewolves. The magic is another good actor in the book, well written, easy to picture and credible.

The plot is well thought, there isn’t any hole in the story. Everything has a reason and once the puzzle is resolved, you see why things happened the way they did. Of course we have some loose ends because this is the first in a series.

Overall, Everlasting is a fantastic new adult paranormal romance with wonderful characters. I can’t wait to read book two and the novella told from Jaxen’s point of view.

Blog Tour: Summoned by @rainyofthedark (Review, Author Interview & Giveaway)

Welcome to the Summoned Blog Tour. Let me start by saying I LOVE the cover, isn't the bad boy attitude something we all love??? I'm in love of the male model they chose for this cover.

Title: Summoned
Author: Rainy Kaye
Series: Summoned #1
Release Date: March 28th 2014
Format: E-book (kindle edition)
Publisher: Immortal Ink Publishing
Source: complimentary copy from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Twenty-three year old Dimitri has to do what he is told—literally. Controlled by a paranormal bond, he is forced to use his wits to fulfill unlimited deadly wishes made by multimillionaire Karl Walker.
Dimitri has no idea how his family line became trapped in the genie bond. He just knows resisting has never ended well. When he meets Syd—assertive, sexy, intelligent Syd—he becomes determined to make her his own. Except Karl has ensured Dimitri can't tell anyone about the bond, and Syd isn't the type to tolerate secrets.
Then Karl starts sending him away on back-to-back wishes. Unable to balance love and lies, Dimitri sets out to uncover Karl's ultimate plan and put it to an end. But doing so forces him to confront the one wish he never saw coming—the wish that will destroy him.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Imagine having a genie that fulfills every wish that cross your mind. Now, imagine being the genie, the one who has to kill, kidnap or torture just because a paranormal bond forces you to do it. No so funny when you look it that way, isn’t it?

Summoned is the story of Dimitri a 23-year-old genie who has to follow deadly orders from a multimillionaire. To make things more interesting enters Syd, a sexy and surprising woman who immediately gets along with him. They start a passional and occasional relationship that soon develops into more. They both have secrets that complicate things even more.

Dimitri is a great character, not only he is a sexy man with great abilities (not only for killing) he has a soft side despite being a ruthless killer. His internal battle between his desires and the task he has to complete is thrilling and heartbreaking. Some of his dialogues were so intense that I had to stop for a second. The anguish, suffering and torment he has to go through was so touching that I wish he was real only to give him a hug.

Syd is one of those characters that blow your mind away with every action or word. She is full of surprises and is hard to getting to know her. There is kind of a sadness in her that we see through Dimitri’s eyes that make her more mysterious.

The story has an adult level not only because it has sex, vulgar language, killing, torture and explosions on it. For me it requires mature readers because the book has two characters with profound issues and strong personalities who act in strange ways and it's easy to judge them. So in order to understand them or at least try to, you have to be a mature and open person.

The language is excellent, with real and vivid dialogues. The descriptions are engaging, detailed and believable. The author writes with an intensity that comes to life while we read.

Summoned is not a mere paranormal romance because it has a lot of mystery and action. For moments is more about the chasing, the plotting, the killing and how to stay alive. You will be reading every page waiting for the unraveling of all the secrets.

Overall, this is an excellent new adult paranormal story. A great way to introduce a forgotten paranormal being, the genie, with blood, gunshots, car rides, bad people and the inevitable... love.

Is Summoned your first novel?

No, but yes. But no. I've completed four other manuscripts before Summoned, but they are all part of another series which is not quite ready to be plopped onto Amazon. My friend, author Natasha Larry, and I decided to take a break from our usual made up worlds and each try something else. Sixteen days later, I had written the draft of Summoned. A couple of months later, I signed with my lovely agent, Rossano Trentin.

Do you intend to write any more novels?

Yep. While Summoned was written as a standalone novel (no cliffhanger), there are likely to be a few more adventures with Dimitri. He's way too much fun to write. Plus there's that other series in progress, and a few other outlines floating around in my brainspace.

Why did you decide to write about genies?

I didn't decide to write about genies. I decided to write about Dimitri and, as it turns out, he's a genie. He doesn't live in a lamp or use magic, but you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a wish he has to fulfill.

Why did you write about a male character?

The primary protagonist of the other series is also male, so even though Dimitri is nothing like him, it wasn't something I had to give any real thought. Despite the fact “kick ass females” are a big thing right now, I think you just kind of know if your character is going to be male or female.

What was the most difficult part of writing Summoned?

I was working a day job and then turning around and pulling another eight hours writing. I did this nearly every night for sixteen days. So, basically, the hardest part of writing Summoned was recovering from the caffeine addiction.

Devil 13: Book I - Chronicle - Review, Author Interview & Giveaway (Int)

Title: Devil 13: Book I - Chronicle
Author: Kenneth D. Watson Jr.
Release Date: February 13th 2014
Format: Paperback & E-book
Publisher: Outskirts Press
Source: complimentary copy from the author in exchange of an honest review.
Key Gifford bears the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. As the 13th Devil, Key was born for a specific purpose: either to be a sacrifice-a way for Hell to claim and destroy the earth-or to make a Garden of Eden of our world and grant humans immortality.
Key is the single catalyst to Armageddon or deliverance, and being responsible for the salvation or death of humanity is a burden he is desperately trying to escape. In this powerful debut novel, Key and his partner, Elizabeth Hellsing, must find the Shroud of Turin if they are to have any hope of changing Key from the 13th Devil into a human.
They'll face unholy opposition at every turn, but if they succeed, it will cancel out the prophecy, free Key from his own sacrifice... and save the Earth from total destruction.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The fight between good and evil is endless. It began when humans appeared on Earth and it will go on forever. But when a half-demon is born as part of a prophecy that states that either he will bring Heaven to Earth or set in motion the Armageddon the story takes a whole new level.

Devil 13 is an electrifying, exciting and full of action book with the premise of being a great series. In this book, Key (the half-demon of the prophecy) is travelling with Liz (a descendent from the Hellsing family) in search of The Shroud which seems to be the only way for Key to become fully human.

Of course the book has bad guys, in this case Abaddon and his group of devils is behind Key and his friend. These devils are really bad beings with no respect for human life. They star in some bloody scenes that surely will impress everyone around. There is another group, the Holy Knights who are this armed force commanded by the Pope.

The story is a perfect representation of the human spirit and what makes us humans. Despite being only half human, Key has a strong sense of rightness and a pure heart. On his quest for salvation he reminds us that no matter where you come from doing what is right is always a choice.

The story has a great writing style. The action scenes where we read about the fights and all have a fast but readable rhythm. Then the passing slows down a bit when we read about Key's internal dilemma. The narrator changes point of view to show all the sides in the story, which is great. Also, the cover art is amazing. I loved it and I think it captures the essence of the book perfectly. Just FYI, Devil 13 Book One – Chronicle is the first of a planned series of four books and I can’t wait to read book two.

Overall, Devil 13 is an entertaining, well written paranormal book. A refreshing story in the good versus devil battle because for now there is no angel, or angels, trying to save the world just a sweet half-demon running against time and an old prophecy.

Ruth: What inspired you to write Devil 13?
Kenneth: I wrote Devil 13 due to an inspiration and love of anime.  I had always dreamed that one day I’d create a series of my own and people would love my characters and cosplay as them.  But, as a black man from Maryland, I set my sights on being an author instead.

Ruth:I know the concept goes back to 2005, but how long took you to finish the book once you started writing?
Kenneth: Well, I started to write Devil 13 in 2008.  From there, I made regular progress on the story, but took a hiatus in 2010.  After about a year, due to procrastination and unforeseen happenings, I got back into writing Devil 13.  I finally finished in 2012.

Ruth: Did you do a lot of research to write it or just let the imagination fly away?
Kenneth: Actually, I did do research.  I wanted to be sure about the biblical references, geography, weaponry, and other elements that I made mention of in the story.  That way, the reader would feel like the story was a bit more realistic or authentic.

Ruth: Is there a sequel in the process?
Kenneth: Yes.  This is a series of four different books.  Book 2: Tribulation  should be available in few months.

Ruth: Key has a sweet personality, his humanity is touching and makes us all look like bad people. How was creating him? Did you get inspiration from any real person?
Kenneth: His personality is based of a combination of things.  He’s based mostly off of me and how I think, and he’s based off of that honest Dudley Do Right sort of value that you might expect from some heroes..

Ruth: How was to imagine the Holy Knights because they are a kick ass groups?
Kenneth: The idea behind the Holy Knights was partially inspired by the military in the Full Metal Alchemist anime.  But, I wanted to make an organization that was more serious.  I often imagined how real people might handle the fact that demons and other paranormal activity sometimes occurs.

Ruth: The bad guys in this book are really wicked and evil, was it easy to write the

bloody scenes?
Kenneth: Writing the bloody scenes was quite easy for me.  Not because I’m sadistic or I fantasize about stuff like that all day.  No, I’m nothing like that.  The violent scenes are from me having a large imagination and being blessed to entertain.

Now, let’s go into personal ground.
Ruth: Are you a religious person? How does this affect your writing?
Kenneth: I am religious.  I like to think that due to my being religious, I can tell the story from different perspectives and angles.  I pray daily, thanking God for my being blessed to write and being a person who is funny.  Now, you may be wondering, “Wait a minute, people swear in his story, so how religious can he be?”  True, ya got me there.  I type swear words into my stories, but I don’t think my story would be as interesting if people didn’t swear or put in something graphic; it’s more realistic that way.  I figure as long as I don’t say any of the swear words out of my mouth, then that’s some good at least.

Ruth: Was finding out you had a brain tumor a crucial point for your writing?
Kenneth: No.  I had just started writing this when the whole tumor situation came about.

Ruth: Anything else you like to share with the world?
Kenneth: My awesome cover art is done by a good friend of mine.  Here’s her website

He lives in District Heights, Maryland, where he has lived his whole life. He began conceptualizing Devil 13 in 2005 but put no words to paper until 2008, right before he was hospitalized for a brain tumor. Since then, Kenneth has undergone four brain surgeries and is currently attending at Prince George's County Community College. He is also the father of nine-year-old Lashay. Devil 13 is his first novel.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What is a kiss? A great kiss can change the world. It can be the beginning of something beautiful or the end of a friendship. We all know that a kiss means much more than the simple contact between the lips and well… any body part you can imagine. A kiss is not easy to define but is a gratifying experience because let’s face it I'm sure we all like to kiss and be kissed.

Violet Blue has written an entertaining, educational, hilarious book that contains everything you need to become the world greatest kisser. It doesn’t care if you are single or you have a special one, we all need to kiss someone and this book will help you to be better at it. From the do’s and don’ts in kissing, quizzes and how to sex up your lips, the book explores with comical examples what a kiss means and the importance of it.

The author uses a simple and everyday language, with a writing style that creates a friendly atmosphere. It’s almost as if you were hearing a friend talking to you. The pages flow naturally and the reading won’t take you more than a couple of hours.

Something important is that the book focuses on kissing. It gives a few tips on how to take things to another level but sex is not part of the book. I stated this in case someone jumps into the book expecting something that is not going to happen or the other way around, someone says no to the book thinking it has a hotter topic.

Overall, Kissing: a field Guide by Violet Blue is a MUST for everyone. It’s fast, engaging, enjoyable and enlightening.
